EVERETT — One of two alleged thieves who ran from police Tuesday night and tried to get away by jumping into the Snohomish River had to be rescued, Everett police Sgt. Boyd Bryant said Wednesday.
Officers responded to the boat launch in the 1000 block of 10th Street near Marine Park about 8 p.m. on a report of two men breaking into a vending machine, he said. Port of Everett security personnel saw the two men running. The men jumped into the water and began swimming south toward a large crane on a barge, Bryant said.
Police officers arrived and urged the men to swim to the barge. One made it safely, but the other ran into trouble.
An officer tied a loop in a rope and lowered it to the second man, who was pulled out of the water after he wrapped the loop around his body.
The two men, 29 and 30, were arrested on investigation of first-degree malicious mischief and booked into the Snohomish County Jail. Bryant estimated damage to the vending machine at more than $1,500. The culprits left a crowbar in the machine.
