EUGENE, Ore. — A summer celebration of Eugene’s wacky ways has been canceled, for this year at least, but there’s some hope for the annual parade featuring the city’s Slug Queen.
The Register-Guard (http://bit.ly/1x7iHT4 ) reports the Eugene Celebration began 31 years ago. But financial support has dwindled and it has passed from the city to a nonprofit to a business owned by Kit Kesey, nephew of author Ken Kesey.
Kesey says the city’s downtown revitalization has taken up space used for the event, and many new businesses didn’t like having food booths out front for a weekend.
Organizers of the annual beauty queen spoof say a new Slug Queen will be crowned on Aug. 8. The Eugene Celebration was scheduled two weeks later. Kesey said he hopes a parade can still be organized.
