EVERETT – Flames and smoke rolled out of a third-story apartment Monday, but Everett firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to any other units.
The fire broke out just before 2 p.m. at the Continental Plaza apartments in the 3200 block of Wetmore Avenue.
No one was inside the apartment at the time of the fire. The residents, a woman and her young son, arrived home about an hour after the fire was extinguished, Battalion Chief Steve Parker said.

Eighteen residents were evacuated. Firefighters carried one woman from the building. She was being treated for an ongoing medical condition and was checked by paramedics as a precaution, Parker said.
No injuries were reported.
The apartment was destroyed, Parker said. The fire is still under investigation, but the cause appeared to be an electrical problem, Parker said.
“Flames were coming from the balcony. They were shooting about 8 feet in the air. It was pretty gnarly,” said Terry Haynes, who lives down the street from the building.
Haynes was behind the building when he heard someone yelling for people to get out.
Firefighters made an aggressive knockdown, Everett Fire Marshal Warren Burns said.
“They pushed it out through the balcony, like textbook firefighting,” Burns said.
