EVERETT — A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when an experiment with explosives went wrong.
The teen, along with two 15-year-old boys, was experimenting with explosives and pipes in the 10500 block of 19th Place W. when the materials ignited and exploded, according to police spokesman Sgt. Boyd Bryant.
The boy suffered significant injuries to his hand, Bryant said. The other two boys were not injured. There was extensive damage to the house.
Detectives with the bomb squad along with the Everett Fire Department were investigating the incident.
Police likely will refer the case to the juvenile court to determine if the boys will face a felony charge of manufacturing an explosive, Boyd said.
"It is common this time of year for youngsters to gather old fireworks and experiment," Bryant said. "This is the typical tragic outcome of these experiments. It isn’t the first time this year. We only hope it will be the last time."
