Everett children honored for summer reading program

More than 1,000 children participated in Everett Public Library’s summer reading program, earning prizes like free pizza, bowling and other rewards donated by Everett businesses.

This is a list of names of the 348 children who finished the entire program. They have earned all of the 10 prizes, and each have read 100 books or participated in 100 timed 30-minute reading sessions.

These finishers received the Mayor’s Award, and were honored at the Mayor’s Award ceremony Thursday at Everett Civic Auditorium. Mayor Ray Stephanson greeted each child and library director Mark Nesse presented the award certificates.

Maltby boy raises cash for Camp Erin

Alex Pride of Maltby, along with his friend Gage Fortier, raised $80 for Camp Erin with his recent Alex’s Lemonade Stand in Everett.

Alex, 11, has also helped with Providence Hospice &Home Care of Snohomish County by assisting at the annual volunteer retreats. Alex hopes to repeat his lemonade stand and encourages other youths to raise funds for the organization’s bereavement camp for kids and teens.

County Red Cross names directors

Nancy Holiman of Arlington has been elected chairwoman of the board of directors for the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Red Cross volunteer marches in Italy

Bev Riter of Everett, a Red Cross nurse with the Snohomish County chapter, led an eight-mile torchlight march in Italy this summer during Fiaccolata 2005. More than 15,000 celebrants participated in the festive trek from Solferino to Castiglione to commemorate the founding of the Red Cross.

Riter, a Red Cross volunteer for eight years, is the first volunteer from the Snohomish County chapter to be selected as a member of the Red Cross International Response Team. Her numerous disaster assignments have included New York City following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
