The congregation at Mill Creek Hispanic Foursquare Church in Everett rocks.
On Sunday nights, as Eddy Lopez and the worship team crank up the music, people go wild for Jesus.
Little girls wearing dresses dance with the pastor. Men clap and stomp their feet. Women lift their hands to the heavens.
There’s even loud whistling.
And soon, the worship services will rock in English.
That’s because pastor Jose Monterroso, who speaks Spanish and English, plans to start an English service soon, he said.
Jose’s wife, Darlene, who also is a pastor, plans to lead the English services, she said.
Darlene Monterroso speaks some Spanish but her primary language is English, she said.
“When I preach in English my husband interprets for me,” Darlene Monterroso said.
Most of the 50 people who attend the church speak Spanish but four or five people speak only English, said Jose Monterroso.
So church members who are bilingual have been interpreting the sermons for them, he said.
Carmen Harris is one of the members who speaks English and some Spanish. She’s been attending the church since 2005.
“This church reaches out to everyone,” she said.
Harris said she is looking forward to the English services and she especially enjoys the exuberant worship she’s found at the church.
“God is all about worship,” Harris said. “He says, ‘Worship with everything you have.’ “
And what about the church’s name?
The Monterroso’s originally started the church in Lynnwood, Darlene Monterroso said.
The church moved to Everett in November 2007 so it could find a more permanent home.
That dream may become a reality soon. The tiny church was approved for a $450,000 loan to buy the building they’ve been leasing, Jose Monterroso said.
“For years, I had been looking for a place for our church to meet,” he said.
