EVERETT – City Council veteran Doug Campbell on Wednesday said goodbye to his council colleagues.
On his last day as a council member, an emotional Campbell talked of the difficulty of leaving his adopted home of 19 years.
“Even though we’ll be leaving this community Saturday, a big piece of me will stay here,” he said during the council meeting. “Even though we are leaving now, I hope we will be returning to this area.”
Campbell, 42, is moving to his native Broken Bow, Neb., with his wife and two children to take a job as president of that city’s newly formed economic development corporation.
In a brief ceremony, council President Arlan Hatloe presented Campbell with a glass plaque and a scrapbook with pictures from Campbell’s more than 12 years on the council. Hatloe praised Campbell for his honesty and integrity.
“Doug is the kind of guy who, when he tells you something, you can take it to the bank,” he said.
“In a time when politics is increasingly polarized, I appreciate your sense of decency and civility,” Councilman Mark Olson said.
The council will meet at 10 a.m. today to interview the three finalists for Campbell’s seat. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be in council chambers at 3002 Wetmore Ave.
The finalists are city planning commissioner Drew Nielsen, restaurant owner Jim Staniford and business consultant Robert Strickland. A three-member council screening committee last month chose the three from a list of 11 applicants.
