EVERETT — In a few months, homeowners may not be allowed to store recreational vehicles and boats in their driveways.
Everett’s Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing on a proposed amendment that would prohibit parking RVs, campers, travel trailers and boats anywhere between the main house on a lot and the streets that border it.
The proposal also would prohibit storage on vacant residential lots. It requires all vehicles that require a license tab to have one that’s current.
The hearing is set for 6:30 tonight at the eighth-floor hearing room at 2930 Wetmore Ave.
The commission also plans a public hearing on allowing antique stores and secondhand stores on portions of Hewitt Avenue that are designated for retail shops.
In 2006, the city designated sections of Hewitt, Colby, Wetmore and Rockefeller avenues as “retail streets” and limited the type of businesses that could set up shop in street-level storefronts.
No second-hand stores, tattoo parlors, pawnshops, food banks or other businesses the city considered incompatible with a walkable, window-shopping atmosphere.
Officials are now taking another a look at the restrictions on second-hand stores, after property owners complained it was making it more difficult to fill vacant buildings on Hewitt.
The proposed change would specifically define “pawnshop,” “junk store” and “thrift store.” The city would continue the ban on those businesses but would allow antique shops.
