EVERETT – Youth racers and power car fanatics took their passion for speed off the streets and into Everett City Hall today, imploring council members to find solutions instead of targeting young spectators.
But citing public safety, the City Council voted in favor of making it a criminal act for anyone caught participating, promoting or encouraging illegal street racing. The council passed the ordinance 6-1 with Councilman Bob Overstreet voting against.
The new ordinance goes into effect 15 days after it’s signed by Mayor Ed Hansen. Now, anyone caught in attendance of an illegal street race faces a charge of unlawful race attendance, a misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $1,000 and 90 days in jail.
