EVERETT — The Everett City Council on Wednesday tightened its policy governing how elected officials are reimbursed for travel-related expenses while on city business.
The new policy establishes set times for meals, ties the per diem reimbursement rate to that used by federal employees, and includes municipal judges among those officials subject to the rules.
The changes were prompted by an audit by the State Auditor’s Office in 2015 that identified risk areas, and in one former council member’s case, examples of expenses that were not documented properly to be in the city’s interest.
The council approved the policy changes unanimously. This is the first time in 17 years the council has updated this policy.
