Whidbey base is 67
Naval Air Station Whidbey Island is celebrating it’s 67th anniversary. The PBY Memorial Foundation is celebrating its 11th anniversary.
As part of the festivities, a Catalina PBY-6A seaplane is scheduled to fly in today and to be on view through Sept. 25. PBYs were patrol bombers manufactured by Consolidated Aircraft Corp. from 1936 to 1946.
The utility aircraft were used nearly 60 years ago on Whidbey Island to lug personnel, supplies and information to the Aleutian Islands. The plane scheduled to be shown was later converted so it could drop water and retardant on forest fires.
The plane will be parked at 315 W. Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor at the old seaplane base. For more information, call 360-675-5789.
