EVERETT — A 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted Thursday in a hallway at North Middle School in Everett, leading to the immediate suspension and arrest of a male student, police said.
The assault, described as a "brief, not protracted incident," occurred during school hours in a small area between two sets of doors along a hallway, according to police.
Both students were out of class on hallway passes. The victim immediately notified school officials after the reported attack.
A 14-year-old male student was arrested on charges of third-degree rape and booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center, Everett police Sgt. Boyd Bryant said.
He was also given an emergency expulsion, which will be reviewed at a hearing later, said Gay Campbell, Everett School District spokeswoman.
The victim was taken to Providence Everett Medical Center for evaluation and later released to a parent.
The area where the attack happened is obscured by sets of doors on either side. The doors are meant to reduce noise. But Campbell said school authorities were already working to remove one set of doors.

Coffee stand robbery: Luck was against an alleged coffee stand robber who came to the attention of police early Thursday after a holdup at B.J.’s Java in the 15000 block of Highway 99.
Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies were notified that a man with a handgun had robbed the stand and fled at about 4 a.m. He was driving a two-door car with the word "turbo" in white letters on the doors, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.
At 4:20 a.m., Brier police spotted the car and tried to stop it, but the driver eluded them. Mountlake Terrace police then found the car and began pursuit. Edmonds police also joined the chase.
The car drove into a neighborhood with no outlet and crashed into a large evergreen tree at Logan and Hilltop roads, Jorgensen said. The driver was arrested.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the robbery.

Lumberyard fire: The Snohomish County fire marshal is seeking the public’s help to determine the cause of a fire that caused an estimated $60,000 in damage at a York Road lumberyard.
Fire officials aren’t yet labeling the Dec. 29 fire an arson, or even suspicious.
The fire was discovered in a large stack of lumber at a wholesale cedar business in the 3100 block of York Road just north of the Mukilteo Speedway.
Deputy fire marshal Ed Hardesty asked anyone with information about the fire to call his office at 425-388-3557.
