ARLINGTON — When a chocolate Labrador’s keen nose led him to pot Thursday, authorities led an Arlington man to jail.
Dutch, a drug-detecting dog with the Everett Police Department, alerted officers to more than 10 pounds of marijuana and $14,000 in cash in the trunk of a car.
The incident began when a 26-year-old man allegedly made an unsafe lane change southbound on I-5 about 10:30 a.m.
Everett police Sgt. Dan Boardley was on his way to work and stopped the man’s car just past the southbound Smokey Point offramp.
Boardley, a bomb technician and one of two supervisors of the Anti-Crime Team, ran a license check on the man and discovered that his license was suspended. The driver also provided falsified insurance documentation, Officer Daryl Eby said. Boardley found a small amount of marijuana in the man’s car, and he had three large rolls of cash on him, Eby said.
Eby and Dutch were on their way to work, too, and stopped to help Boardley with the traffic stop.
Dutch sniffed around the 1990 Honda and reacted to the car’s trunk, Eby said.
"Dutch gave us probable cause for the search warrant," Eby said.
Police had the car towed to Everett and obtained a search warrant. They found more than 10 pounds of marijuana in 17 plastic bags, which they suspect is potent "B.C. bud" from British Columbia, with an estimated street value of nearly $30,000. They also seized $14,000 in cash.
Some of the cash was stashed under the front passenger seat and some in the back seat, Eby said.
The driver was booked into Snohomish County Jail on investigation of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
Dutch was rewarded for the capture with a few minutes to play with his chew toy.
The 8-year-old police dog has been with Eby since he was 6 weeks old, and with the police department since January 1998. He’s captured more than 300 criminal suspects and racked up more than $4 million in asset and drug seizures, Eby said.
