EVERETT — Two water mains have broken in the past two days in Everett.
The first break took place Friday at about 2:15 p.m. in the View Ridge/Madison neighborhood. A six-inch main on W Mukilteo Boulevard between Seahurst Avenue and Glenhaven Drive broke and cut off water to 22 homes.
That break was repaired and water service restored by about 6 p.m.
Then shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday morning, a 12-inch cast iron water main broke near 34th Street and Wetmore Avenue. City public works crews rerouted the water and were able to restore service to all but two homes in the area during repairs.
Two homes lost water service, and the streets near the break flooded. One home was damaged when a cement slab was pushed into a garage, said Kathleen Baxter, a spokeswoman for the city’s public works department.
“It was a serious break,” Baxter said.
Water discoloration was reported at least as far south as the Lowell neighborhood.
The second break was repaired and water service was restored by 2:23 p.m., Baxter said.
Homeowners who lost water service should expect their water to be discolored after it is turned back on. The water is not unsafe, the city said. Public works staff recommended letting the lines settle for a bit before turning the taps back on, starting with the cold tap.
Baxter said it usually takes about half and hour after the system is flushed before newly treated water reaches residential taps.
