EVERETT — Folks at the Carl Gipson Senior Center are hoping somebody has an old kiln they’d be willing to donate.
A fire destroyed a kiln at the center earlier this month right as a group of seniors were getting their Christmas pottery projects ready for firing.
An art project with the wrong type of paint went into the kiln and started a fire. The ceramics room still smells like burnt plastic and will need a fresh coat of paint, said director Debra Loughrey-Johnson.
Nearly 30 seniors participate in the ceramics program. It’s an important creative outlet, she said.
In a few cases, it’s been a lifesaver. One woman who is blind uses the opportunity to keep her hands agile. Another won ribbons at the county fair, giving her just the boost she needed during a difficult time.
The class runs almost entirely on donated materials.
“It’s not a moneymaker but it’s one thing some of these people totally enjoy,” the director said.
The senior center is hoping someone in the community will step forward to replace the kiln.
“If anybody has any resources, it’s not in our budget,” she said.
If you do, call her at 425-257-7080.
