Bastyr University President Thomas Shepherd announced his resignation Tuesday, but said his departure would not affect the college’s plans for expansion in Everett.
The Kenmore-based college, which teaches natural healing and health sciences, is looking to add educational and health services in Everett, and possibly even open a branch campus.
“We are interested in continuing to pursue this. … We will continue to have a dialogue with the city,” Shepherd said. “Me leaving is not going to hinder the future plans.”
Mayor Ray Stephanson said Tuesday that though Shepherd was key to the partnership between Bastyr and Everett, the plans now have broad support.
“We continue to have confidence that our relationship with Bastyr is solid and will continue to grow,” Stephanson said.
Shepherd took a higher-education job on the East Coast that will allow him to be closer to his family, he said.
Only the second president in Bastyr’s 26-year history, he served about four years as president. The college’s board of trustees will immediately begin a search for his replacement.
