EVERETT — An Everett woman died of smoke inhalation in a two-alarm fire off Mukilteo Boulevard.
Josefa Starbuck, 87, died early Friday at her home off Shore Avenue, in spite of efforts to save her.
A neighbor rushed inside the burning home but had to retreat, according to the Everett Fire Department. Firefighters carried her outside. Paramedics performed CPR, but Starbuck died at the scene.
Her husband, a retired physician, had escaped without serious injuries.
Their daughter suffered burns. She was being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
It appeared the fire started in the basement, Assistant Fire Marshal Steve Goforth said.
A neighbor said Starbuck grew up in Spain, then moved to the Edgewood neighborhood with her husband in the 1970s.
Her identity and cause of death were confirmed by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
