EVERETT — A woman napping in an Everett-area home awoke Wednesday morning to discover her home was on fire.
The woman escaped safely, but the fire destroyed the house, located in the 12300 block of 29th Avenue SE.
The sound of crackling fire woke the woman, and when she went to investigate discovered her back porch was on fire, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1. The blaze was reported at 11:31 a.m.
Flames were coming through the roof when firefighters arrived and had spread to three large trees.
"We had crews assigned to protect neighboring houses," Hynes said.
It took about 40 minutes for crews to bring the fire under control, and firefighters stayed at the scene Wednesday night to tend to hot spots.
Bothell:
State to fine itself: The state Department of Transportation says it expects to be fined by the state Department of Ecology for an incident that happened here in early May.
A Transportation Department crew allowed 300 to 400 gallons of slurry — a mixture of mud, water and concrete — to escape into the city’s drainage system.
In a news release Wednesday, the department apologized to the city and said it is pursuing disciplinary actions against the crew.
A Bothell environmental inspector noticed the slurry coming from a drilling and boring project along Highway 522 on May 7 and obtained a stop-work order.
