Gov. Gregoire named education chairwoman

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire was named education chairwoman for the nation’s governors on Monday.

Gregoire, in Charleston, S.C., for the annual summer meeting of the National Governors Association, was elected to lead the Education, Early Education and Workforce Committee. The first-term Democrat had been vice chairwoman.

“In Washington, we have reduced class sizes, provided pay increases for teachers, increased standards at day care and preschool centers and established a Running Start for the Trades program to provide pre-apprenticeship grants to students to pursue their interests,” she said in a statement released by her office.

Gregoire also said she has joined her colleagues in a letter to congressional leaders strongly opposing legislation that would allow the White House to federalize the state’s National Guard during domestic emergencies without the governors’ consent.

She said the legislation was drafted without input from governors and usurps their authority over their state’s guards.

California: Charges in Longview death

A fugitive charged with two counts of murder, including the slaying of a Washington state woman, was captured Monday after two newspaper employees tackled him during a carjacking, authorities said. John Wayne Thomson, 46, was arrested in Victorville.

Thomson was charged with murdering Lori Hamm, 36, of Longview whose body was found early last week in Cowlitz County in Washington. He also was charged with murder in the death of Charles Ray Hedlund, 55, of Lucerne Valley, who was reported missing last Wednesday.

The FBI plans to question Thomson in the July 7 disappearance of James Ehrgott, 73, of Spokane. Authorities said Thomson has an extensive criminal record that includes three felony rape convictions. He has spent most of his life in prison and psychiatric hospitals, Penrod said.
