CONWAY – A head-on crash on I-5 in Skagit County killed two people on Friday, including a child, the Washington State Patrol said.
It was the second fatal head-on collision on I-5 in the state in as many days.
The accident occurred near the Conway exit south of Mount Vernon when a southbound SUV collided with another southbound vehicle, apparently when one was making a lane change, trooper Robert Wilson said.
The SUV crossed the median and collided head-on with a northbound vehicle carrying two adults and three children. A boy about 10 years old in the northbound vehicle died. The woman who was driving the SUV also died, Wilson said.
The male driver of the northbound vehicle was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The other adult and two children from that vehicle were treated at local hospitals.
The driver of the second southbound vehicle involved in the original collision was not injured, Wilson said.
Identities of those involved were not immediately available. Wilson said the SUV was registered in Arlington, and the driver was from Everett. The second vehicle in the initial collision was registered in Oak Harbor, and the northbound car was from Vancouver, B.C.
Northbound traffic during the accident investigation was detoured across an overpass and back onto the freeway.
On Thursday afternoon, a head-on crash south of Seattle near Kent killed one woman and closed northbound I-5 lanes during the evening rush hour.
