EVERETT – Garbage rates could be going up in Everett.
Rubatino Refuse Removal Inc., which picks up most of the garbage in the city, is asking the state Utilities and Transportation Commission for an increase of about 4 percent in refuse pickup rates.
The company’s president, Ed Rubatino, said the rate increase would help his company cover increased costs for fuel, insurance and wages since 2001, the last time Rubatino was granted a rate increase.
The commission is expected to make a decision within the next few weeks. Rubatino is requesting that the increase take effect July 1.
If the commission approves the request, the monthly cost for a residential customer to have a 20-gallon garbage can picked up once a week would rise from $14 to $14.60.
The cost for a 32-gallon can would rise from $18.20 to $18.95. And the cost for two 32-gallon cans would rise from $23.75 to $24.70.
For business customers, rates would rise from $61.85 to $64.26 per 1-cubic-yard bin, and from $105.85 to $109.98 per 2-cubic yard bin.
Yard waste and medical waste pickup rates would remain the same.
