Expensive piece of rescue gear stolen from car

SNOHOMISH – A high-tech rescue device was stolen from a Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue crew member Monday after somebody broke into his vehicle in the 100 block of Cedar Avenue.

Besides many personal items and other search and rescue equipment, the thief made off with a $1,200 piece of gear called Project Lifesaver Receiver. The device is used to locate missing autistic children and Alzheimer’s patients wearing special transmitting devices.

Included in the loss was the victim’s hiking gear, a radio, construction tools and other items. Anyone with information is asked to call the Snohomish Police Department at 360-568-0888.

Woman shot in abdomen: Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies responded to what they were first told was a suicide attempt Sunday in the 11600 block of 17th Avenue SE.

Whey they arrived, officers found three men and a woman, all intoxicated, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.

The woman said she and her husband had been arguing for up to four days. She said she picked up a pistol and was playing with it when her husband tried to take it away.

The weapon discharged, wounding her in the abdomen.

The woman, 44, was taken by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. The wound is not life threatening, Jorgensen said.

Web auction scammer sentenced: A Snohomish County woman who operated a fraudulent Internet auction scam was sentenced to five years of probation Friday by a U.S. District Court judge.

Rachel Irene Noia, 21, opened auction accounts on eBay.com and Yahoo.com and sent out advertisements for such gear as high-end designer handbags, Rolex watches and digital camcorders.

Once the auctions closed, Noia contacted prospective buyers and told them to send payment. She never had the merchandise, much less sent it, according to the U.S. district attorney’s office.

Between December 2000 and February 2001, she raked in more than $30,000. She will have to pay nearly $35,000 in restitution.
