Snohomish church hosts food bank
SNOHOMISH — When Jennie McGlothlen saw the growing number of people in her church and community needing food, she decided to help.
In April 2005, McGlothlen started a food bank called The Pantry.
The Pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the third Saturday of the month at Forest Glade Community Church at 19510 S. Carpenter Road, Snohomish.
Recently, volunteers at The Pantry have seen an increase in the number of people coming for food, said Cathy McPhail, who teaches a Sunday school class for fourth- and fifth-graders at the church, and who also helps at the food bank.
Over the last two months, Jerry Clark of Machias, a customer at the food bank, has been bringing in food from his own garden to share with the volunteers, said McGlothlen.
“He wanted to show his gratitude,” she said.
Like many people at Forest Glade, McGlothlen is a person who wears many hats. She started the food bank as her missions project. She is also the church’s webmaster. And she and her husband, Rich, are youth program leaders who also teach the junior and senior high school Sunday school classes at Forest Glade.

United Methodist Church wins award
MILL CREEK — Cedar Cross United Methodist Church in Mill Creek is a great place for new people.
At least that’s what they’ve been stamped.
The congregation recently was recognized by United Methodist Communications, their denomination’s communications agency, as an official “welcoming congregation.” A “welcoming congregation” is one that is recognized for embracing newcomers and providing discipleship opportunities. The program is part of a larger effort, launched in late 2000 by the communications agency, to invite people to church using modern technology. The effort includes a series of national cable television ads based on the theme “open hearts, open minds, open doors.”
Cedar Cross United Methodist Church has six people on its welcoming committee who work to make sure guests and members always feel welcome.
Cedar Cross United Methodist Church is at 1210 132nd St. SE, Mill Creek. Cedar Cross recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.
Pastors celebrate 70th wedding anniversary
EVERETT — Gene and Doris Born, both 92 and former pastors of Bethany Christian Assembly in Everett, recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
Both were pastors at the church for 18 years.
During the time the Borns were pastors, the church was called Bethany Temple and it was at 26th Street and Oakes Avenue in Everett.
The two met at Northwest Bible College in 1937. Doris was from Great Falls, Mont., and Gene hailed from Latah in Eastern Washington. They were married on Sept. 2, 1938, after graduating from the college.
The Borns served together as pastors at a variety of churches, first in Spanaway and then in Kittitas. At that last church, the number of people attending grew from 20 to 350. Later, the couple moved to Montana, where they served as pastors at several churches. The last church, where they served for 14 years, was in Missoula.
They also acted as assistant superintendents of the Washington State Assemblies of God for 10 years.
The Borns have three children: Ronald Born, Beverly Tonn and Darlene Thompson.
