Snohomish church urges members to give
The congregation at Snohomish Community Church is involved in a conspiracy: They’re spending less and giving more this year.
It all started when pastor Wayne Smith encouraged the congregation to work with Advent Conspiracy, a movement that helps churches find charitable projects to fund, such as drilling a well in a developing country or encouraging congregations to think of meaningful acts of kindness as gifts that replace traditional ones.
To date, more than 1,000 churches in 17 countries have participated in the Advent Conspiracy movement.
Among the ways the Snohomish congregation is being encouraged to participate are giving gift certificates to family members that reflect donations made to Advent Conspiracy projects, volunteering at a charity, going Christmas caroling in their neighborhoods or donating money to the Everett Gospel Mission or to Living Water International.
During worship services, offerings have been taken in which people could designate their tithe for the “conspiracy” projects.
Organizers plan to send half the money collected to the Everett Gospel Mission. The other half is slated to go to Living Water International to help build wells around the world.
Last year through Advent Conspiracy, churches raised $3 million for relief projects that included providing clean water and medical attention in communities around the world.
