Monks will create mandala at university
Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in India plan to spend four days on the Bastyr University campus in Kenmore to create and sweep away a sacred sand mandala, a spiritual exercise that honors impermanence.
The event is set to begin Tuesday and run through Friday.
The opening ceremony is set for 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The monks will construct the mandala in the cafeteria on Bastyr University’s main campus.
All scheduled events are free and open to the public. The university plans to sell products related to the mandala in support of the monastery.
The monks plan to spend three days constructing a multi-colored sand mandala. The construction is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday; and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday.
A closing ceremony is set for 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday where the monks will chant and play instruments in a traditional ceremony. The mandala will then be swept up. Half of the sand will be distributed to the audience and the remainder will be deposited in Lake Washington.
Bastyr University is at 14500 Juanita Drive NE, Kenmore adjacent to Saint Edward State Park. For more information call 425-602-3107 or go to www. bastyr.edu.
