Faith & Spiritual Life: Good works

Pets receive blessing at Bothell church

Pets need blessings, too, and Light of the Cross Lutheran Church in Bothell recently held a Blessing of the Animals service for pets.

Such services often are held yearly near the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Members of the congregation brought their animals and the Rev. Cindy Salo blessed them. Tom and Alexia Payne brought their dog, Lily.

Crowd gathers for new Thanksgiving service

Downtown Everett’s community Thanksgiving service got off to a good start, and organizers already are making plans for next year.

Roughly 80 people converged at the plaza at the Snohomish County Courthouse to give thanks and sing on the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving. Those who attended enjoyed prayers, blessings and a variety of musical presentations, led by vocalist Ida Mitchell and Steve Torrance, First Presbyterian Church choir director. The Trinity Lutheran College touring ensemble also performed, led by Jody Cook, the college’s music professor.

“On a crisp autumn day, the crowd was good and the music was outstanding,” said Fred Zoeller, Westminster Presbyterian Church pastor and a reserve chaplain who helped organize the event.

“This was due to Trinity’s wonderful and personable ensemble along with Steve Torrance and Ida Mitchell,” he said.

John Geiszler, lead pastor of The Gathering Place, a new Everett Foursquare church that meets in the Silver Lake area, said the service was something that pastors in the area had been praying about for many years.

“I’m excited with what the Lord has begun and will continue to do through these pastors and the churches in Everett,” Geiszler said.

Festival nets food, money for food bank

They ate candy, played games and jumped in bounce houses. And they helped provide meals for those in need.

About 1,300 people recently came to the Snohomish Freshman Campus for the fourth annual Snohomish Children’s Carnival, an event held on Halloween this year and organized by 11 Snohomish churches and two local businesses.

Admission was free but organizers asked revelers to bring a canned food item for the Snohomish Food Bank.

“We collected 10 small crates of food and $158 for the food bank,” said Enos Marshall, an associate pastor at Snohomish Faith Assembly, the lead church for the event.
