EVERETT — Families in the Casino Road area are invited to a resource fair that will bring together clubs and activities for children and teens, mentoring opportunities and law enforcement.
The goal is a safer Casino Road neighborhood.
Free and open to the public, the event is sch
eduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 22 at the South Everett-Mukilteo Boys & Girls Club.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County, a branch of YMCA of Snohomish County, is hosting the fair in recognition of National Mentoring Month.
“This is new,” said April Wolfe, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County. Wolfe said Monday that money from the United Way of Snohomish County Community Matters Fund, intended for gang prevention, is making the Casino Road Community Resource Fair possible.
The fund will provide $26,000 per year for three years, Wolfe said.
The gang-prevention funding is meant to aid kids at risk of future gang involvement, said Wolfe, adding that the Casino Road area is one of several pockets in the county identified as having gang problems. Agencies represented at the fair will offer positive influences in an effort to keep kids away from gangs.
Along with Big Brothers Big Sisters, organizations scheduled to participate are: Cocoon House, Little Red School House, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire USA, the YMCA’s Minority Achievers Program, Boys & Girls Clubs, Volunteers of America, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and Casino Road Futbol Academy.
Wolfe said money from the Community Matters Fund is expected to help fund Big Brothers Big Sisters matches for an additional 20 to 24 children. In all, she said, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County matches more than 400 children each year, most from low-income and single-parent households, with nurturing adult volunteers.
