CORVALLIS, Ore. — Officials who want to link Corvallis and Albany with a bike path could be on a collision course with farmers whose land it would cross.
The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports the Benton County planning commission meets Tuesday to consider a permit for it.
A lawyer for a dozen farmers says there will be appeals to state agencies and the courts if the permit is approved.
Farmers say the 9.5-mile path would expose them to trespassing, vandalism, crop and equipment theft, and objections from trail users to chemical sprays.
Benton County officials say they’re trying to promote healthy activities and bike commuting. They say other farmers have either signed easements or are in negotiations.
County Commissioner Linda Modrell says condemnation proceedings are possible if bargaining and mediation don’t work.
