Fatal accident: A Monroe-area man drowned when his car ran off a road east of Maltby, plunged down an embankment and flipped over, landing upside down in Evans Creek, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Fernando Martinez Cardenas, 24, died at the scene Tuesday. The crash was determined to be an accident.
A passing motorist discovered the accident about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 188th Street SE and Fales Road east of Maltby, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said. The Chevrolet Beretta landed in 3 to 4 feet of water.
No one knows how long the car was in the creek before the motorist found it, she said. The accident appeared to be related to the snow and icy roads.
