Security at Washington state’s only suspension bridge, across the Tacoma Narrows, was being scaled back after the FBI said Tuesday that information of possible terror attacks on West Coast bridges is not credible.
Two roads and a park beneath the bridge were scheduled to reopen today, said Jody Woodcock, spokeswoman for Pierce County Emergency Management.
California state officials nevertheless remained on high alert, with California National Guard troops continuing to patrol the state’s major spans.
A warning of an "uncorroborated" threat against West Coast suspension bridges was passed on last Wednesday to law enforcement nationwide.
But the public didn’t know about the threat until California Gov. Gray Davis announced Thursday that federal officials had "credible evidence" that terrorists might be targeting four California suspension bridges for attacks over the next few days.
That surprised federal officials, who nevertheless supported Davis’ decision to warn Californians.
