EVERETT — A $7.9 million federal grant will help pave a taxiway at Snohomish County’s Paine Field airport, county officials announced Thursday.
The money from the Federal Aviation Administration comes on top of $11 million in federal stimulus dollars already headed to the airport. Combined, the money should help the airport nearly complete an overhaul of its runways and taxiways.
The stimulus money allowed the airport in June to begin repairing the main runway and the south portion of a parallel taxiway. The FAA grant will allow work to continue on the north part of the taxiway.
The airport’s main runway will be closed for six days beginning at 6 p.m. today to grind down the top layer of asphalt and repave it. It was last repaved in 1996 and is nearing the end of its intended lifespan. The taxiway was last repaved 25 years ago.
