EVERETT – A man opened fire in an apartment Monday night and threatened to kill himself and his girlfriend before jumping out a third-story window, according to court papers.
The man, 24, a convicted felon, was being held Tuesday for investigation of first-degree assault at the Snohomish County Jail on $25,000 bail.
Police were called to the 1000 block of 112th Street SE about 9:15 p.m., the papers said.
The man’s girlfriend, 23, told police he likely was on drugs and paranoid when he went into his bedroom and starting firing a 9mm handgun, according to a police affidavit filed Tuesday in Everett District Court.
The woman tried to flee to her bedroom. The man came out of the bedroom with a double-barreled shotgun and told the woman she was “going to die” with him, according to the affidavit.
That’s when he allegedly struck her in the head with the weapon.
At some point the man apparently leaped or fell from a bedroom window, still carrying the shotgun, police said.
“I don’t know if his departure was a deliberate effort to harm himself or an effort to escape,” Everett police Lt. Ted Olafson said.
The man later told police he was going to shoot himself, according to court records.
Police wrestled with the man, using an electronic stun gun several times in an attempt to subdue him, the papers said.
The man allegedly attempted to reach for his gun and a knife during the struggle with officers, police allege.
Police found shell casings and bullet holes in the apartment’s walls.
Police found that the man allegedly had more than a gram of methamphetamine and dozens of prescription narcotic pills, the papers said.
He was taken to Providence Everett Medical Center and later released to police, Olafson said. The man apparently hurt himself in the fall.
The man refused to attend a bail hearing Tuesday. A judge ordered him to appear in court today.
Prosecutors have until the end of the week to file charges.
