Ferndale teen accused of bomb threat at school

FERNDALE – A 15-year-old Ferndale High School student has been arrested, accused of making a threat in an Internet chat room to set off a bomb at his school.

The boy, who was arrested May 22, has been charged with threatening to bomb or injure property. He was in the Whatcom County Juvenile Detention Center on $1,000 bail.

The boy told police he wrote the threat after he was pushed around by some students at school, court documents said.

Police shoot man in traffic stop: A police officer shot and killed the driver of a car that dragged the officer’s partner after a traffic stop, police spokeswoman Pam McCammon said. The incident began Thursday night when the two officers pulled over a white Cadillac that had been driving erratically in the city’s Central District, McCammon said. One officer spoke with the driver, who handed over his ID as requested, but then pulled it back. When the officer reached in to grab it, the driver grabbed his arm and stepped on the gas, McCammon said. The officer’s partner caught up with the car on foot, opened the passenger door and struggled with the driver. The second officer “ended up having to fire a single shot into and striking the driver,” she said. The man, identified as Aaron Roberts, 37, of Seattle, died at Harborview Medical Center, McCammon said.

UW teaching assistants strike: Unionized teaching assistants, readers and graders went on strike and began picketing Friday at the University of Washington after last-ditch contract negotiations collapsed. The university remained open, but the walkout by the Graduate Student Employee Action Coalition-United Auto Workers, which represents as many as 1,600 teaching aides, could hamstring grading of final examinations. Unresolved issues included health insurance, work load, job security, arbitration provisions and recognition of the union as bargaining agent, said Kristen Intemann, a TA in philosophy and union spokeswoman.

Man gets life for killing benefactor: A man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a woman and attacking her husband with a hammer after the couple befriended him at a Longview homeless shelter and took him in. James Richard Ferrell, 26, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to the Nov. 16 slaying of Lisa Davis, 39, and the assault on Carl Davis, 60, in their Vancouver home. Ferrell, 26, could have faced the death penalty, but was given a life term in exchange for pleading guilty to aggravated first-degree murder and first-degree assault.
