MUKILTEO — A morning ferry crash at the Mukilteo landing badly damaged the dock and the vessel. The route is operating with only one ferry and the crash is causing significant delays.
No serious injuries were reported, officials said.
The MV Cathlamet was traveling too fast when it hit part of the dock at about 6 a.m., ferry spokeswoman Susan Harris-Huether said.
The Coast Guard and the ferry system are investigating the cause of the crash, she said.
While ferry officials worked to find a second boat to make the 20-minute crossing to Clinton, service has been reduced to one boat leaving each side about once an hour, Harris-Huether said.
“People can expect delays until we get this resolved,” she said.
Ferry officials hope to have two boats in service by this afternoon’s commute.
The Cathlamet was taken to an open slip in Clinton as the investigation continues, she said. The ship likely will need to be taken out of service and sent to a boatyard for repairs.
Crew members remained with the boat this morning for questioning.
In 2006, the Mukilteo-to-Clinton route carried more than 4 million passengers.
