TACOMA — If you’re shopping for souvenirs this week in Parkland, the head of the crew that scrapped the historic ferry recommends gloves and your own container. The port holes, pistons, brass window frames and assorted other hunks of metal are dirty and rusty.
The News Tribune reported the souvenirs will be laid out Friday and Saturday at a Parkland storage yard.
Demolition crew chief Mike Lano Sr. said the Rhine Demolition office was flooded with calls and emails about souvenirs after the Kalakala was taken to the scrap yard earlier this year.
Prices will range from about $10 to $3,000. Credit cards or cash will work.
The sleek, silver ferry was a postcard symbol of Seattle in the days before the Space Needle. After the 276-foot vessel was used as a fish processor in Alaska it was returned to Puget Sound. But plans to restore it never came up with enough money.
