State lawmakers this week will consider two of the biggest needs of the Washington State Ferries – boats and money.
Today at 3:30 p.m., the House Transportation Committee will hold hearings on legislation to construct passenger-only ferries and to allow out-of-state ferry builders to compete for some contracts in Washington. This latter bill would revise the existing “Build in Washington’ requirement of the ferry system

Today’s meeting will also feature discussions on the ferry system budget and its wide-ranging plan for how it might operate in the future. This proposal predicts that without a new source of revenue the system will be unable to build needed boats and maintain its existing fleet.
