BURIEN — The city of Burien has a plan to dispose of the smelly carcass of a fin whale that washed ashore Saturday on its Puget Sound beach.
Parks Director Michael Lafreniere said the National Marine Fisheries Service helped arrange for the dead whale to be towed off the Seahurst Park beach Tuesday evening at high tide.
It will be towed to a secure beach on Puget Sound where it can decay naturally. Timing depends on tides and rigging.
People are encouraged to stay away from the whale and the park will be closed during the operation.
Experts who examined the whale say it apparently was hit and killed by a ship in the Pacific and dragged into the sound on the bow. Some red paint was found on the whale.
