EVERETT – A historic home was destroyed early this morning in what appears to be an accidental fire.
A neighbor called 911 about 2:30 a.m. after seeing smoke and flames coming from the house, located in the 5800 block of S. Second Ave in the Lowell neighborhood, said Rick Robinson, the city’s assistant fire marshal.
The neighbor and another person pounded on windows and doors to wake up the homeowner. They found the woman, in her 80s, lying in the grass behind the house. She reportedly crawled out a window and fell about five feet, Robinson said. She was taken to Providence Everett Medical Center. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, Robinson said.
Firefighters attempted to enter the house but flames ate away at the floor, making it unsafe for crews to fight the blaze from inside, Robinson said. Crews doused the flames from outside the house in attempt to keep it from spreading to nearby trees.
The flames blazed from inside windows and sent an enormous plume of smoke into the air, Robinson said.
No firefighters were hurt.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
