SHELTON – Fire destroyed a restaurant known as the Up the Creek Bar and Grill on state Highway 3 south of downtown Shelton early Sunday morning.
The fire broke out about 4:30 a.m. and was first reported by a passer-by who saw flames shooting from the roof, said Bob Burbridge, assistant fire chief of Mason County Fire District 4.
The 27-year-old building, formerly known as the Mill Creek Inn and later the Doowop Diner, had no sprinklers or fire alarm, he said.
More than 50 firefighters from Mason, Thurston and Grays Harbor counties battled the flames over a period of several hours.
No one was hurt. No estimate of damage was available Sunday night.

Seattle: Historic bell returned to UW hall
A historical 400-pound bell that tolled to mark the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln and Kennedy and alerted locals to the Great Seattle Fire in 1889 is back on top of Denny Hall at the University of Washington. The cast-iron Denny Bell was removed from its perch nine years ago for restoration. On Saturday, construction workers used a crane to hoist both bell and cupola – totaling 10,000 pounds – back onto the building they’d graced for more than 100 years. The corroded bell and copper cupola were refurbished last year. Workers vacuum-coated the bell with plastic for added protection and to ensure its sound wasn’t altered. The bell also was X-rayed for cracks.

Idaho: Governor denies disaster-area request
Gov. Dirk Kempthorne has denied a request by Canyon County commissioners to declare the county a disaster area because they fear an “imminent invasion” of illegal immigrants. County Commissioner Robert Vasquez asked his fellow commissioners in January to consider the request after he saw a comic book-style guide that provides safety advice for illegal immigrants planning to cross into the United States. Vasquez said the guide had set the stage for an invasion of illegal aliens.
