LYNNWOOD — Snohomish County Fire District 1’s newest station is up and running.
Firefighters on Thursday started responding to their first calls from Fire Station 10, which is a block east of Highway 99 at 3922 156th St. SW.
The 13,000-square-foot, $5.4 million station includes crews quarters, a training room and apparatus bays for a fire engine and medic unit. It is staffed by three firefighters around the clock.
Jim Kenny, chairman of the Fire District 1 Board of Commissioners, said money to buy the land and build the fire station did not come from the $19.3 million bond voters approved in 2002. Much of that money went toward construction of other fire stations.
“The bond money had been used up before we did Fire Station 10,” he said. “These are tax dollars we put into our building fund reserve account.”
It’s the seventh fire station in the district, which also runs three fire stations in Edmonds and two in Mountlake Terrace under contracts with those cities.
The Fire District also is building a new Fire Station 18 in Brier to replace the existing Station 18, which is in Mountlake Terrace.
A grand opening and open house is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 22 at the station.
The open house will include a ceremony featuring the Fire District 1 Honor Guard and the Snohomish County Firefighters Pipes and Drums.
In addition, there will be station and fire engine tours, bunker gear demonstrations, activities for children and refreshments.
Fire District 1 serves more than 225,000 people in south Snohomish County, including Brier, Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds and Woodway.
