EVERETT — Snohomish County Fire District 1 has filed a lawsuit to fight an annexation that is scheduled to appear on the November ballot for Mukilteo voters.
The district is appealing a decision made by the Snohomish County Boundary Review Board that gave Mukilteo the green light to annex a large area south of town from Picnic Point to Highway 99.
The area, about 2,660 acres, is home to more than 11,000 people. Fire District 1 currently provides fire and emergency medical services to the proposed annexation area.
The lawsuit alleges that the boundary review board’s decision isn’t supported by evidence. The annexation would mean reduced fire and medical services for people living in the proposed area, according to the lawsuit. Also the district contends that boundary review board member Lori Kaiser had a conflict of interest because she sat on Mukilteo’s 2009 salary review commission, court papers said.
The lawsuit was filed late last week in Snohomish County Superior Court. The district is asking a judge to prohibit Mukilteo from proceeding with the annexation.
