SEATTLE — Fire officials say a fire has gutted an apartment complex south of Seattle. The blaze sent a plume of smoke visible from downtown Seattle and as far away as Tacoma.
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at the Lighthouse Apartments. The nonprofit Union Gospel Mission owns and operates the four-story, 18-unit apartment for low-income people.
Kent Fire Capt. Kyle Ohashi says the fire is under control and crews are putting out hot spots.
The Gospel Mission’s senior vice president Gary Fast says about 30 people had to flee the burning apartment building and that “everyone is accounted for.” Ohashi says two people were taken to hospitals with burn injuries.
Fast said “Everybody is shaken up. It’s a tough thing. Some of their vehicles were consumed in the fire, too.”
