EDMONDS – Crews quickly extinguished a house fire in Edmonds this morning where neighbors and witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion. No one was hurt.
Investigators were still trying to determine what sparked the blaze in the garage of a two-story rental property in the 8700 block of Main Street, Edmonds Assistant Fire Chief Mark Correira said.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown, but neither the fire nor the explosion seems suspicious, said Mike Smith, the Edmonds Fire Department’s acting fire marshal.
The fire was called into 911 at 9:36 a.m.
Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and found flames bursting out of the basement-level garage and lapping up the side of the home.
They called for a second alarm to summon additional crews but quickly canceled that when they got the upper hand on the blaze, Correira said.
Five people lived in the home, which is now uninhabitable.
Fransisco Esqueda has lived there for two years with his wife and two small daughters. Esqueda’s younger brother recently moved in, too, said Esqueda, who used a family friend as an interpreter.
Crews from Edmonds, Lynnwood and Snohomish County Fire District 1 battled the blaze.
