YAKIMA — A wildfire that burned about 15 square miles near Yakima in central Washington state continues to put up smoke today, but with calmer winds firefighters are making progress.
A spokeswoman for West Valley Fire and Rescue, Chritsy Boisselle, said the fire is about 15 percent contained, “and if the weather cooperates they’ll have much more contained today.”
One of the biggest losses in the fire may be one of the departments own fire trucks, worth $400,000.
Unable to turn around, it was caught by flames. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries such as sprains and singed hair.
The fire that broke out Sunday in grass and brush also reportedly burned three homes and a number of outbuildings.
