Firefighters use police boat for Jetty Island fire

EVERETT – Firefighters rode a police boat out to Jetty Island late Monday after a tugboat skipper alerted them to a growing brush fire on the north end of the summer destination spot.

About 9:40 p.m., the grass fire was reportedly covering a 20-foot-by-20-foot area and spreading.

Three firefighters responded with a portable pump system.

Battalion Chief Dave Neyens explained that the pump uses water from the river or bay when normal equipment can’t be used. The pump can be used from a boat if a fire is close enough or taken and put on shore, using hoses to reach a fire location.

Crews were still putting out the fire at The Herald’s press time.

Monroe: Suspicious powder found

A makeshift envelope stuffed with garlic powder created a stink Monday at the Washington State Reformatory.

A counselor found the envelop under his door about 10:30 a.m. When he opened it, he was dusted with a white powder, reformatory spokeswoman Jane McKenzie said.

Unsure what the powder was, hazardous materials teams from three fire departments were called to the prison as a precaution. The office was cordoned off, inmates were locked down and three employees, including the counselor, were decontaminated.

Firefighters analyzed the substance and concluded it was garlic powder about four hours later, McKenzie said. No one was injured.

Reformatory staff are investigating who was responsible for the scare. McKenzie said it was likely an inmate as the envelope was made out of a request form issued to prisoners.

Freeland: Oak Harbor man dies in car crash

An Oak Harbor man was killed Monday after his sports utility vehicle reportedly collided with another vehicle.

The crash happened about 9:40 a.m. at Mutiny Bay and Bush Point roads, according to the Washington State Patrol. The Oak Harbor man, 49, reportedly crashed into a second vehicle driven by a woman, 70, from California. His vehicle flipped on its top and the man died at the scene. The woman was taken to Whidbey General Hospital for her injuries.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Monday.

Stevens Pass: Woman dies in motorcycle crash

A 58-year-old Shoreline woman died after her motorcycle left Highway 2 about 4 miles west of the summit.

Pamela Farrell was heading east on a 2006 Harley Davidson at about 12:30 p.m. Monday when the motorcycle left the right side of the road and went into a ditch, striking several large rocks.

Farrell suffered head injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she died. She was wearing a helmet.

The Washington State Patrol continues to investigate why the motorcycle left the road. Alcohol was not a factor.

Marysville: Two men arrested after robbery

Two men were arrested after they reportedly robbed Del’s Produce and Supermarket on Sunday.

The men, 20 and 24, came into the store about 3:30 p.m. and demanded money from the owner, Marysville police Cmdr. Ralph Krusey said. When the owner refused to hand over any money, one suspect grabbed the cash register. The owner reportedly pulled back, but the second suspect threw a glass bottle at him, nearly hitting him in the head, and the other suspect shoved the owner, Krusey said.

The suspects ran from the store with the cash drawer to a waiting vehicle. A witness followed the vehicle until police caught up. The driver refused to stop for police. Officers chased after the suspects for a short time. The suspects were eventually stopped and arrested.

An Arlington man, 24, was booked into Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree robbery and assorted warrants. The other man from Island County was booked for robbery and eluding police.
