LYNNWOOD — Fireworks are to blame for a blaze that caused thousands of dollars of damage Monday night to the roof at Hilltop Elementary School, officials said.
An investigator with the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office determined fireworks sparked flames in an evergreen shrub and those traveled to a wooden roof overhang, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Fire District 1.
Crews were able to contain the fire to a small area on the roof. Damage initially was estimated at $40,000 but repairs now are expected to cost about half that, or less, Hynes said.
It is illegal to use fireworks now.
“We would like to once again remind everyone in unincorporated Snohomish County fireworks are only allowed on July 4,” Hynes said.
