SEATTLE — To kick off the agency’s new Sounder commuter rail service for Snohomish County, Sound Transit is giving away 500 tickets for a free ride to the Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona Cardinals game on Sunday.
Those who want a free ride to Seattle to do some holiday shopping without dealing with traffic hassles also will get four solid hours before the train returns to Everett.
The tickets will be given away on a first come, first served basis Sunday morning, with tickets being given out at Everett Station starting at 9:30 a.m., and 10:45 a.m. in Edmonds. The train will get into Seattle about 45 minutes before the 1 p.m. kickoff.
The Sounder will leave Everett Station at 11:15 a.m., then leave Edmonds Station at 11:42 a.m. and finally arrive at 12:14 p.m. at the King Street Station in the International District.
It will leave Seattle at 5 p.m. and get back to Edmonds Station at 5:27 p.m. and arrive in Everett at 5:59 p.m.
This first Sounder trip will be the culmination of seven years of work to bring commuter rail to Snohomish County.
"Commuter rail service was one of Snohomish County’s top priorities for the Sound Move plan approved by the region’s voters, and today we’re delivering on that," said Dave Earling, a Sound Transit board member. "Sunday’s train ride will be the happiest of my life."
Snohomish County Executive and Sound Transit board member Bob Drewel will also be on the train, fulfilling a yearlong promise to leave office in style. Because of term limits, Drewel couldn’t seek re-election.
"If I was going (out of office) on a rail, I’d rather it be on this one," he said.
