1. SORTICULTURE
Chillin’ like a villain: That’s what a lot of us want to be doing this summer. For ideas on how to make your backyard experience super cool, go to the Sorticulture Garden Festival. This year’s theme is “A Backyard Oasis.” Visit more than 60 garden art vendors and view display gardens and outdoor garden rooms. Sorticulture runs from noon to 8 p.m. June 16 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 17 at Legion Memorial Park, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett. For more information, go to www.everettwa.org.
2. JETTY ISLAND
Play on the wild side: Wildlife abounds in the summer on sandy beaches and in shallow warm water on Jetty Island, a 2-mile long, manmade island west of Everett. Jetty Island Days run from July 5 to Sept. 3. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sundays.
3. EVERGREEN STATE FAIR
Want a treat? You bet. So head on down to the Evergreen State Fair, where you’ll find classic family fun, including animals to see and pet, scary rides to ride, and corn dogs and elephant ears to munch. On the Grandstand Stage: Jars of Clay, Aug. 27; Raven-Symone, Aug. 28; Roy Clark, Aug. 29; Kenny Loggins, Aug. 30; Trace Adkins, Aug. 31. The fair runs from Aug. 24 to Sept. 4 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, 14405 179th Ave. SE, Monroe.
4. KITE FESTIVAL
Look, up in the sky: You might see a bird or a plane, or Nemo for that matter. Just about any kite you can imagine will soar during the Whidbey Island Kite Festival and Sport Kite Championship. Food, drink and lots of lattes will be available. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 23 and 24 at the Casey Conference Center, 1276 Engle Road, Coupeville. It’s all free. 5. BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL
Who needs another Woodstock? We’ve got the Darrington Bluegrass Festival to keep the spirit of American acoustic music alive. During this outdoor music fest, participants nestle up next to White Horse Mountain. The music plays July 21 to 23 at Darrington Bluegrass Music Park on Highway 530. Tickets range from $10 to $35.
