Q: This question has to do with the school zone light that is constantly flashing on 132nd Street SE in the Mill Creek/Bothell area at Penny Creek Elementary School, which is in the Everett School District.
When the school opened, the school zone light, which flashes to slow motorists down to 35 mph from 45 mph, was turned off when school was in session, then turned on when school got out. But now it seems someone has gotten lazy and is not turning it off and on, so in turn, they are encouraging drivers to blow through the school zone at 45 mph at all times.
I did call the Mill Creek Police Department, and they said that it should be turned off when school is in session. So what is the answer to this dilemma? Who is right? We are all tired of driving through that area and slowing down, knowing that it is not a school zone at 10:30 a.m. or at 1:15 p.m.

A: Dongho Chang, state Department of Transportation engineer, said the flashers on 132nd Street SE for Penny Creek Elementary School are turned on and off by the school. The flashers are on from approximately 6:50 to 9:20 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and from 2:25 to 3:50 p.m. on weekdays.
If the flashers are operating outside of those hours, contact the school at 425-338-5080, Chang said.
