The National Weather Service in Seattle issued a flood warning early Monday after heavy rain pounded the mountains of east Snohomish County during the night. Water over roads had caused several closures throughout the county by Monday afternoon.
By 11:30 a.m., the Skykomish River near Gold Bar had reached moderate flood stage, as waters rose over 17 feet. The Stillaguamish River also spilled over its banks, causing minor flooding near Arlington and Granite Falls.
The Skykomish is expected to flood near Index, Sultan, Monroe and Snohomish. Water is likely to cover roads, including Ben Howard, Index-Galena and Tualco Loop.
The city of Monroe warned that the Skykomish River and Woods Creek were expected to flood low-lying parts of city parks, including Al Borlin, Lewis Street and Sky River. The city asked people to be careful and stay out of closed areas.
The Skykomish was expected to recede by Monday evening but waters are likely to remain high around Snohomish until Tuesday.
The rising Stilly was expected to reach the Silvana area, covering parts of Pioneer Highway and Norman Road on Monday before receding.
